Hey there, denim lovers! As a jeans supplier, I've seen all kinds of jeans - from the classic blue denim to the most trendy and unique styles. And one thing I know for sure is that sometimes, you just need to hem your jeans to get that perfect fit. Whether you're tired of stepping on the ends of your jeans or you want to turn your long jeans into stylish shorts, hemming them at home is a great way to save money and add a personal touch to your wardrobe. In this blog post, I'm gonna walk you through the steps of how to hem jeans at home, so you can rock your favorite pair with confidence.

What You'll Need

Before you start hemming your jeans, you'll need to gather a few supplies. Here's what you'll need:

  • Jeans: Obviously, you'll need a pair of jeans that you want to hem. Make sure they're clean and dry before you start.
  • Scissors: A good pair of sharp scissors is essential for cutting the denim.
  • Measuring Tape: You'll need a measuring tape to measure how much you want to hem your jeans.
  • Pins: Pins are used to hold the fabric in place while you're hemming.
  • Needle and Thread: You can use a sewing machine, but if you don't have one, a needle and thread will work just fine. Choose a thread color that matches your jeans.
  • Iron: An iron is used to press the fabric and make the hem look neat and professional.

Step 1: Measure and Mark

The first step in hemming your jeans is to measure how much you want to hem them. Put on your jeans and stand up straight. Decide how long you want your jeans to be and mark the desired length with a pin. Make sure the mark is even on both sides. You can also use a measuring tape to measure the same length from the bottom of the jeans on both sides and mark it with a pin.

Once you've marked the desired length, try on your jeans again to make sure the length is right. If it's not, adjust the pins until you're happy with the length.

Step 2: Cut the Excess Fabric

After you've marked the desired length, it's time to cut the excess fabric. Take off your jeans and lay them flat on a table. Carefully cut along the marked line with your scissors. Make sure you cut straight and even.

If you're turning your jeans into shorts, you can cut them to the desired length and skip the next few steps. Check out our Women's Denim Shorts for some inspiration!

Step 3: Fold and Press the Hem

Once you've cut the excess fabric, it's time to fold and press the hem. Fold the bottom of the jeans up by about 1/4 inch and press it with an iron. Then, fold the fabric up again by about 1/2 inch and press it again. Make sure the fold is even and straight.

You can use pins to hold the fold in place while you're pressing. This will make it easier to sew the hem later.

Step 4: Sew the Hem

Now it's time to sew the hem. You can use a sewing machine or a needle and thread to sew the hem. If you're using a sewing machine, set it to a straight stitch and sew along the edge of the fold. Make sure you sew close to the edge of the fabric to make the hem look neat and professional.

If you're using a needle and thread, thread your needle and tie a knot at the end. Start sewing along the edge of the fold, using small, even stitches. Make sure you sew through both layers of fabric. When you reach the end of the fold, tie a knot to secure the thread.

Step 5: Press the Hem Again

After you've sewn the hem, it's time to press it again. Use an iron to press the hem flat and make it look neat and professional. Make sure you press the hem from the inside of the jeans to avoid burning the fabric.

Step 6: Try on Your Jeans

Once you've finished hemming your jeans, try them on again to make sure they fit and look good. If you're happy with the way they look, you're done! You've successfully hemmed your jeans at home.

Tips and Tricks

  • Use a Seam Ripper: If you make a mistake while hemming your jeans, don't worry! You can use a seam ripper to undo the stitches and start over.
  • Practice on a Scrap Piece of Denim: If you're new to sewing, it's a good idea to practice on a scrap piece of denim before you start hemming your jeans. This will help you get the hang of sewing denim and make sure you're using the right technique.
  • Use a Jeans Needle: Denim is a thick fabric, so it's important to use a jeans needle when you're sewing. A jeans needle is stronger and can penetrate the fabric more easily.
  • Sew Slowly and Carefully: Sewing denim can be a bit tricky, so it's important to sew slowly and carefully. This will help you avoid making mistakes and make sure the hem looks neat and professional.
